At South Plains Implement, we are proud to be your trusted resource in agriculture in West Texas and New Mexico—not just when it comes to equipment, but also when it comes to the work you do and the challenges you face. We know harvest season demands grit, precision, and long hours, and while your machines are built tough, the real strength behind every successful harvest is you. That’s why we are taking a moment to talk about something that matters just as much as yield: your safety.
Here are our top tips to help you stay sharp, safe, and strong this season:
1. Hydration, Rest & Nutrition - The Farmer's Fuel
You wouldn't run your cotton stripper on an empty tank, so don't do it to yourself either!
- Hydrate like a pro: Water is your best friend out here. Keep a cooler full and sip often—don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
- Pro Tip: Set a timer on your phone to remind you to drink water and stretch every couple of hours. Your body will thank you.
- Rest matters: Fatigue is sneaky. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, drowsy driving caused nearly 700 deaths in 2023. Don’t be a statistic—grab a nap when you need it.
- Snack smart: Small, frequent snacks (think nuts, jerky, fruit, or protein bars) keep your energy steady without slowing you down.
2. Protect your Skin
West Texas sun doesn’t play around. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can do damage.
- Sunscreen: SPF 30 or higher, and reapply every few hours.
- Cover up: Lightweight, long-sleeve shirts and wide-brim hats are your best defense.
- Chapstick with SPF: Don’t forget your lips—they burn too!
3. Road Safety: Be Seen. Be Safe!
Moving equipment on public roads? Make sure you’re visible and predictable.
- Use DOT-approved slow-moving vehicle signs
- Turn on hazard lights and beacons
- If possible, use escort vehicles - especially during early morning or evening hours
Bonus tip: Avoid peak traffic times when possible. Early morning and late afternoon are the riskiest.
4. Lockout/Tagout (LOTO): Don't Skip It!
Before you work on any equipment, make sure it’s completely shut down.
- Power off, bleed off pressure, and wait for all moving parts to stop.
- No loose clothing, no shortcuts
- Communicate clearly with your crew—assume nothing, confirm everything.
Remember: One moment of caution can prevent a lifetime of regret.
5. Fire Safety: Cotton Fires Move Fast
Cotton is dry, fluffy, and flammable—basically the perfect storm for fire.
- Clean out lint and debris daily from your equipment.
- Keep fire extinguishers on every machine - and make sure they are charged.
- Have an emergency plan: Know who to call, where to go, and what to do.
Pro-Tip: A leaf blower is a great tool for quickly clearing lint from hot spots.
6. Mental Health - Don't Tough it out Alone
Harvest can be stressful. Long hours, high stakes, and isolation can take a toll.
- Check in with yourself and your crew
- Talk it out—whether it’s with a friend, family member, or professional.
- You’re not alone, and asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness
